Girls Training League: The training league is designed as a developmental league for Girls in grades 3 & 4, (2ndgrade girls who turn 8 prior to 12/31 during the current season are eligible). The league is divided into 2 divisions by grade, which enables the GBA to provide proper instruction at each age. An additional benefit is the increased chance to play with friends. This developmental program is about teaching the fundamentals of the game. Score is not kept during the scrimmage portions of the season. An assessment is done in late October and teams are put together by the league in early November. You can request to play with a friend, but the need for balanced teams trump player requests.
Assessments: GTL assessments are done in late October/early November and teams are put together by the league shortly after that.
Frequency of events: Teams will meet somewhere between 16 to 18 times from mid-November to early March. This works out to about once a week and there are no set days or time – teams do not meet during the holiday break or winter recess.
Girls JV League: The JV league is designed for girls in grades 5 & 6. A primary goal is the development of fundamental basketball skills in a game setting. Games are officiated using modified high school basketball rules and a score clock is used. A mix of practices and games are scheduled during the season. Equal playing time is required and emphasis is placed on teamwork and having fun. Teams are selected in a draft by coaches after players are assessed. Requests to be placed on a team with a friend cannot be honored. Assessments are usually conducted in early November and the season starts just after Thanksgiving.
Girls Varsity League: The Varsity league is designed for girls in grades 7 & 8. This league runs very much like the girls JV league with slightly more emphasis on competition. The league keeps score with a score clock and has officials like the JV league with the difference being they keep league standings and the season culminates in playoffs. Like all GBA leagues equal playing time and sportsmanship are required. Teams are selected in a draft by coaches after players are assessed. Assessment are usually done in early November and the season starts just after Thanksgiving.
Girls High School League: This league is for all high school students in grades 9-12. This competitive league has a 10 game season which ends with a playoff format. The league starts in the middle of December and the emphasis is primarily on games. Team selection is done by draft after a player assessment that is held in early December.
