League Specific Information

Boys Training League:  The Boys Training League (BTL) is a developmental league for Boys in 3rd and 4th grade, (2ndgrade boys who turn 8 prior to 12/31 of the current season).  The league is divided into 2 divisions based on grade which enables the GBA to provide proper instruction for each age.  This developmental program is about teaching the fundamentals of the game. It is designed as an introductory level program. There are no games – we do not keep score. We do have several controlled scrimmages.

Assessments: BTL assessments are done in late October/early November and teams are put together by the league shortly after that.

Frequency of events: Teams will meet somewhere between 16 to 18 times from mid-November to early March. This works out to about once a week and there are no set days or time – teams do not meet during the holiday break or winter recess.

Boys JV League: The JV league is for boys in the 5th and 6th grade.  Each grade has its own division so all 5th graders play together separate from 6th graders.  This provides more balance with respect to player skills and increases the likelihood that boys will play with friends and classmates.  The JV league uses certified officials and a score clock.  There are modified high school basketball rules which are designed to provide all kids with an opportunity to contribute during the games.  A mix of practices and games provides the right combination to insure player development in a competitive environment.  Equal playing time is required, thus no player should play more than 1/8th more than any other player.  All games and practices are held at Naubuc or Hebron Ave School.  A player assessment is held in early November so coaches have a chance to evaluate players.  The teams are put together in a coaches draft held shortly after the player assessment.  By the middle of November, families will be contacted by their coach via email or phone.  The team rosters and schedules will be available at that time on the web site.  For questions, please contact your league commissioner.

Boys Varsity League:  The Varsity league is designed for boys in grades 7&8.  This league uses high school rules with modified substitution rules.  The league is more competitive then the Boys JV league.  The Varsity league keeps standings and the season culminates in playoffs.  Like all GBA leagues equal playing time and sportsmanship are required.  Teams are selected in a draft by coaches after players are assessed.  Assessments are usually held in the middle of November and the season starts after Thanksgiving.

Boys Majors League: This league is for all high school students in grades 9&10.  This competitive league has more emphasis on games and will have fewer practices then the lower leagues.  The season will end with a playoff format.  The league starts in the middle of December.  Team selection is done by draft after a player assessment that is held in early December.

Boys Senior League: This league is for all high school students in grades 11&12.  This competitive league has more emphasis on games and will have fewer practices then the lower leagues.  The season will end with a playoff format.  The league starts in the middle of December.  Team selection process is a modified draft.

Registration: typically opens in mid-September via the website using the ‘register online’ tab to the left side of the home page.
